Dorothy Winifred McKenzie, beloved mother, and friend to many, passed away on February 15, 2021, surrounded by her family at her home in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was 94. Born on August 21, 1926 in Timaru, New Zealand, Dorothy had a full and passionate life, achieving her goals and impacting many people along the way. Her social circle was wide and inclusive, crossing countries and generations. As a small-town girl with big dreams, she lived life on her own terms. Convention was not a word in her vocabulary. In 1951, she completed registered nurses training at Christchurch Hospital. Soon after, Dorothy married James Montgomery McKenzie on August 14, 1951. The newlyweds settled in Dunedin, where James completed his PhD in physics at the University of Otago. Dorothy worked as a visiting nurse and earned sufficient money to purchase the couple’s first car. To further James’s career opportunities, the couple decided to immigrate from New Zealand to Canada in 1956 and then to the United States in 1960. The family moved several times in the US before finally settling in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1970.
Dorothy led a rewarding life raising her four children, continuing her nursing career, and participating in numerous social and philanthropic activities. She was an active member of The Daughters of the British Empire for over 50 years serving in a variety of roles to support the organization’s charitable mission. She enjoyed her many social engagements, cherished her wide circle of friends and, of course, relished her visits with her children and grandchildren. Known as compassionate and empathetic, family and friends around the world sought her counsel and she always had time to listen. She had a big heart and a quick wit. Additionally, she actively followed world events, was well read, and appreciated a thoughtful discussion on a variety of topics.
Dorothy loved living in New Mexico. A day spent in the sun was the perfect day; whether swimming in her pool, reading in her flower-filled sunroom, or tending to her garden. An ardent animal lover, she welcomed them all, including strays. Walks on the mesa with her dogs were part of her daily routine. Dorothy was a creative spirit. She had only to envision it, to create it. Sewing, knitting, spinning, weaving, needle point, crochet, and quilting were all passions. Early to rise, Dorothy was always on her feet. She loved baking and cooking for her many guests and regularly hosted afternoon teas and dinner parties. Dorothy was also fond of picnic outings; anywhere within a 300-mile drive was fair game to explore for the day. She and James traveled the world together. Over the years, they enjoyed everything from exotic ship cruises and private tours to camping trips in their travel trailer. Dorothy was always planning the next adventure.
Dorothy is survived and will be dearly missed by her four children, Barbara, Pierre, André, and Nicole; ten grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. James predeceased her in 2006.
Donations in memory of Dorothy may be made to the New Mexico Chapter of the Daughters of the British Empire. Kindly make out checks payable to DBE - Helen McClelland Chapter and mail to Gillian Ward, Chapter Treasurer, 9201 Ridgefield NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87109.
