Dorothy S. Jones Dorothy Ann Schmidt Jones died Saturday, October 13, 2012, in Albuquerque, NM. She was born in San Benito, TX on December 2, 1913 to Dorothy Faye King and Frederick Joseph Schmidt. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Fred H. Jones; brother, Fred Schmidt; sister, Courtney Hatchell and her husband, Allen; and niece, Martha. Dorothy is survived by her son, Bob and wife, Elena; grandson, Jeffery Tabet; granddaughter, Celena Jacquez and husband, Steve; great-grandchildren, Miguel Rubalcaba and Gabriella Grace Jacquez; her daughter, Penny White and husband, Rick; grandchildren, Liz and Charlie White; nephew; Lee Hatchell and wife, Mirelle and their children and grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Betsy Schmidt and her children and grandchildren. Dorothy graduated from Brownsville (TX) High School and attended Brownsville Junior College. She later became Assistant to the Dean at Brownsville Junior College. With the encouragement of her mother, Dorothy moved to Washington, DC where she joined close to a million other young women known as "Government Girls", who worked for the federal government during the Great Depression and WWII, aiding in the recovery and the war effort. She worked in Temporary Building E, which was on the National Mall across from Smithson Castle, the original Smithsonian Museum. All traces of that building, and its neighbors, were removed after the war ended. Dorothy continued to work for the federal government after the war in Dallas, TX. She then returned to Brownsville, working for Braniff Airways, which is where she met her husband, Fred. After Fred returned to the US Air Force, Dorothy was active in Officers Wives Clubs at Fairchild AFB, Offutt AFB, and Ramstein AB, Germany. While Fred was stationed in Vietnam, she was a member of Faculty Wives at NMSU, and Co-sponsor of Waiting Wives. Dorothy was also active in St. Andrews Episcopal Church and a member of the Junior Wives Club in Las Cruces, NM. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, October 29, 2012.
