Dottie Leopold Hooks passed away peacefully Monday, Jan. 23, 2023, at Beehive Homes of Four Hills, Albuquerque, N.M., after a brief illness. She would have turned 89 on Feb. 11.
She was an Albuquerque resident since the mid-1990s and also lived in Albuquerque from 1972 to 1978. She and her husband, Lawrence E. (Larry) Hooks, who predeceased her in April 2000, also lived in San Antonio, Texas; Moultrie, Georgia; Dayton, Ohio; Columbus, Ohio; Oslo, Norway; Fort Collins, Colo.; Brookings, S.D., and Macon, Ga.
She was born in New Rochelle, N.Y, in February 1934. She graduated from New Rochelle High School and married Larry in April 1957, becoming a U.S. Air Force lieutenant's wife. They settled in Dayton and started raising three children - Dan, Steve and Marian. They later moved to Columbus, where Larry earned a Ph.D. from The Ohio State University and Dottie took classes at OSU and gave birth to Heather. The family moved to Norway in December 1969, where Larry worked under a post-doctoral fellowship. They later lived in Colorado, New Mexico, South Dakota and Georgia, where Larry worked as a mechanical engineering professor and department head.
Dottie earned an accounting certificate from Technical Vocational Institute in Albuquerque (now CNM Central New Mexico Community College) and a bachelor's degree in accounting from Mercer University in Macon, Ga. Throughout her life she worked as a typist, a billing clerk and an accounting clerk with the Wildlife & Fisheries Sciences Dept. at South Dakota State University. During her Albuquerque residence in the '70s, she volunteered for the Suicide Prevention Hotline.
Dottie was a member of Congregation Albert in Albuquerque, where she served with the synagogue's Sisterhood community and volunteered many hours in the office.
She leaves behind devoted children, Dan (Polly) Hooks, Sioux Falls, S.D.; Steve (Gail) Hooks, Maryville, Tenn.; Marian Nash, Auburn, Wash.; and Heather (Allen) Greenberg, Albuquerque, N.M.; loving grandchildren Maddie and Rayna Greenberg; Adam, Marcus (Heather), Marian and Isaac (Ashley) Hooks; Daniel (Kat) Nash, Laura (Teddy) Stenmark and Katherine Nash; step-grandchildren Karey (Garry) Fleming and Tara (Jason) Adams; two great-grandchildren, four step-great-grandchildren, one step-great-great grandchild, numerous nieces and nephews and her constant feline companion of eight years, Pumpkin.
Dottie also is survived by sisters, Joyce Weil of New Jersey and Jean Waxman of Arizona. She was preceded in death by parents, Marian (Weinman) and Leonard Leopold; brothers Joe, Edward, Leonard, Bob, Arthur and Herb Leopold; and sisters Maddie Hartvik and Helene Leopold.
The family wishes to thank Heather Greenberg for being Dottie's constant caregiver and the Hospice Compassus staff.
