Dorothy Mabel Spies Allen

d. December 30, 2015

Dorothy Mabel Spies Allen, 88 went to be with God on December 30, 2015. Her fondest wish was to remain at her home and be independent until she went to heaven. Fortunately she was able to stay at home with family, friends and special caregivers. She fought peritoneal/ovarian cancer for 3 years, benefiting greatly from small doses of palliative chemotherapy. She was able to continue her passions of gardening and quilting to the very end.

She was predeceased by Leland, her husband of 55 years, her parents Victor and Leona Spies, her brother, Richard and grandson Kyle Borgfeld.

Born October 23, 1927 in Yoakum, Texas, she attended Yoakum High School and then Texas Lutheran College (TLC) for a 2-year degree. After receiving her degree she stayed at TLC as secretary to the President for several years, where she proudly completed the paperwork transitioning the college from a 2 to 4 year institution. Following her time at TLC she moved to Austin, Texas where she worked as a secretary at the Steck Paper Company.

While in Austin she met Leland Allen. They married in1956 at which time they moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico. After a short time in an apartment on the military base they moved into the house where she would live for nearly 60 years.

Her life's work was raising 3 daughters and volunteering at church and at the girls' schools with their activities. She was a proud "almost charter" member of Faith Lutheran Church, volunteering her time and energy for years including Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, church choir, bell choir and the quilting group. She continued working weekly with the quilters up until only a few weeks ago. In her last years, she was thankful to be surrounded by her local grandchildren, Diana and Daniel, and kept active attending their many activities.

She is survived by her daughters and their families; Lynette Borgfeld, husband Curt, children Caitlyn, Kelly, and Kevin; Dana Mullen, husband David, children Daniel and Diana, and Nina Giglio, husband Michael.

Special thanks are extended to Footprints and Comfort Keepers who sent angels to help at a time when this proud, independent woman finally accepted help. Thanks also to her main physicians Dr. Leo Twiggs and Dr. Thomas McIntosh who she enjoyed surprising with her fortitude in the face of her illness.
