HINMAN, DORIS Doris Hinman, age 103, passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at Twin Oaks Assisted Living. A bright star will be shining in the heavens tonight. Doris Frieda Hemphill was born in Joplin, Missouri to parents, Freddie Mae Hemphill and Dorma Elizabeth Thompson on May 3, 1910. When she was six, she left Missouri with her parents and younger sister, Nadine, and traveled to Colorado by horse and buggy. Doris and Charles Edward Hinman were married in 1933, settled in Albuquerque, NM in 1949 and raised their two daughters, Kay and Joyce. She attended St. Joseph's Catholic Teacher's College to earn her elementary education degree while being a homemaker and young mother. After graduation, she began her career and was passionate in teaching her first graders how to read. It is estimated that she taught 600 students during the next 30 years in APS. She was happiest when teaching someone, whether it be reading, sewing or adding and subtracting. Any free time she had was spent being a 4-H leader, gardening, and traveling in their Airstream. Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Edward in 2002. She is survived by her daughters, Marilyn Kay Kitts (Jim) and Marian Joyce Coffey (Bill); grandchildren, James Tracey Kitts, Jolene Reed (David), Jodi Guerin (John), Teri Coffey, and Brian Coffey (Anne Bonds); great-grandsons, James Trent Kitts, and Shepard and Tuker Guerin; and great-granddaughters, Eliza and Hazel Bonds-Coffey. Services will be a private celebration of Doris' life and will take place at a later date. Doris' wishes, to have no formal service, are being honored. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice of the Sandias, 105 Hospital Loop NE, 87109, a good deed be done in her memory or a donation be made to a charity of your choice.
