Doris S. Dobkins, 85, passed away peacefully in the presence of her family on Sunday, January 23, 2022. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hal L. Dobkins; parents, Manuel and Mela Armijo; sister, Tercilla; and her sons, Frank and Larry Shultz. She is survived by her daughter, Susan; sons, Ronald, Timothy, David, and Jonathan Shultz; as well as her sister, Esther Karnes; brothers, Rudy and Manny Armijo; and many grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.
A lifelong New Mexican, Doris was born in the village of Sabinal and grew up in Clovis where she met her first husband, a decorated Air Force pilot, with whom she had seven children. As a military wife she and her children moved often, including spending several years in Okinawa, Japan before settling in Albuquerque where she raised her family and worked for Albuquerque Public Schools. While there, she met and married the love of her life, Hal, to whom she was married for nearly 30 years. They built a beautiful life together living part time in San Carlos, Mexico where they built a home and became beloved members of that community for many years. Doris was a devoted Catholic and parishioner of St. Bernadette's Catholic Church.
Doris will be remembered as a force of nature: a powerful mother who carved her own way through life, always sustained by her faith. She was an avid fisher, a wonderful storyteller, and a master of New Mexican cooking as only a grandmother can be. She and her beans, green chili, Navajo tacos, and tortillas will be greatly missed.
Doris' life will be celebrated with a Rosary to be recited on Friday, March 4, 2022, 9:30 a.m., at St. Bernadette's Catholic Church, 11509 Indian School Rd NE, followed by Mass. Burial services will take place at Mt. Calvary Cemetery at 11:30 a.m., where she will be laid to rest with her husband, Hal.
