Doris Elaine Conley

d. January 16, 2016

November 18, 1934 - January 16, 2016
Faithful and beloved wife of Col. John T. Conley, USAF, (Ret.), cherished mother of Annadru Lampert (Richard), John T. Conley, Jr. (Laura), Patrick Conley (Cynthia), and Alea Rae Shipman (John), and loving "Huggy" of many grandchildren. Born to the late Viola and Edward "Red" Tucker in Casper, WY, her early childhood was spent in Poison Spider, WY, where she developed an abiding loyalty to her Wyoming roots. Doris was known for her elegance and graciousness, and she maintained a down-to-earth outlook and vibrant sense of humor throughout her adventurous life. Married at 19, she raised her family of four in various locations around the country as a result of her husband John's Air Force postings. She attended the University of Michigan and other colleges during her travels, eventually earning a degree in psychology. Her studies enhanced a native ability to provide wise and thoughtful counsel to those around her. President of her own management services company for two decades, Doris served as Executive Director of the New Mexico Optometric Association, authoring their seminal history, "Optometry in New Mexico, The First Ninety Years." She also served as Executive Director of the New Mexico Podiatric Medical Association, and she was a past president of the NM Association of Meeting Executives (1991). Doris' belief in the power of education and the written word led her to the New Mexico Coalition for Literacy, where she spearheaded a partnership with the New Mexico Optometric Association to provide free and reduced-fee vision services to literacy students. Her work with Birthright of Albuquerque reflected her deeply held views on faith and family. A Mass in celebration of Doris' life will take place at Our Lady of the Annunciation, in Albuquerque, NM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Wyoming Catholic College, 306 Main Street, Lander, Wyoming, 82520.
