Donald D. "Don" Weeke died unexpectedly at home on Wednesday, January 5, 2022. He was born in Houston, TX, on Monday, April 3, 1950, to Dean and Charlyn Weeke. Don came to Albuquerque in 1972 to pursue a master's degree in English from the University of New Mexico. He then worked for UNM until his retirement. He met his wife, Sandy when they were both working at Zimmerman Library at UNM, and they were married on Saturday, October 28, 1978. Don was a devoted and caring husband to her for 38 years until her death in 2016.
Don had many interests including music, cars, traveling, cooking, sailing, surfing, computers, gadgets, and much more. Don could have an intelligent conversation with anyone on any topic. He was loved by everyone who knew him and will be missed greatly by his family, friends, and neighbors.
Don was a true philanthropist and generously supported many causes including Roadrunner Food Bank, Animal Humane Society of NM, Salvation Army, Arthritis Foundation, and The UNM Foundation.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Sandy. He is survived by his stepsons, Don Love (Carol) and George Love; his grandson, Ross Love; sister, Sara Baker (Charlie); brothers, Dan Weeke (Iris), David Weeke (Gwen), and Sam Weeke (Barbara). He also leaves behind his faithful dog, Maddy, who was his constant companion.
Don will be interred next to Sandy at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd NE. A celebration of Don's life will take place during the spring or early summer. Notice of this celebration will be published in the Albuquerque Journal obituaries on a Sunday shortly before the celebration.
