Donald D. Sullivan, Professor Emeritus of the University of New Mexico, died May 28, 2017. He was born May 11, 1930, in Denver CO, of William Donald and Helen Marie Degan Sullivan and was preceded in death by his sister, Helen Mary. Don served as a military cryptographer in the U.S. Army in Verdun, France during the Korean War era and later received degrees from the Universities of Chicago and Colorado and a Fellowship at the Institute for European History in Mainz, Germany. He then taught medieval and Renaissance history and the history of Christianity at UNM for 31 years, retiring in 1998.
In 1964 Don married Eleanor Mary Wall in St. Mary Magdalene’s Catholic Church, Denver. He was a member of Our Lady of the Annunciation, Albuquerque, for 50 years. Don took great delight in the accomplishments of their three children and their families: Donald J. and wife Teresa and sons Dominic and Donald N.; Theresa Mary Sullivan Mooney and husband Dan and daughter Roisin; and James K. and wife Julie. Among Don’s many interests were long hikes, church history, Irish genealogy, and Notre Dame and Broncos football. His family was his greatest joy.
Visitation will be held Thursday, June 8, 2017, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at FRENCH – Wyoming with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be held Friday, June 9, 2017, 8:30 a.m., at Our Lady of the Annunciation Church, 2621 Vermont NE, with Rev. Msgr. Bennett J. Voorhies celebrating. Burial will take place on June 12, 2017 in Santa Fe National Cemetery.
