Donald E. Coates passed away on September 17, 2018 following a massive coronary.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia of the home in Albuquerque, NM; his daughter, Shere Anderson and husband Craig of Olathe, KS; his son, Michael Coates and his wife Kathleen and their children, Kyle, Eryn and Logan of Overland Park, KS; his step-daughter, Terri Marney of Santa Fe, NM and her children, Jessica, Jennifer and Tyler; Carrie Scheufele and husband Jeff and their children, Austin, Jordon and Paul of Lafayette, CO and Janelle Lawrence and husband David and their children, Zach and Luke of Albuquerque, NM; his mother, Elsie Coates of Albuquerque, NM; his sisters, Judith Finch of Apache Junction, AZ, Diane LeBlanc and husband, Charles of Pinos Altos, NM; and his brother, James and wife Paula of Mt. Pleasant, IA. He was preceded in death by his father.
Don was born in St. Joseph, Missouri on February 20, 1940, the son of John and Elsie Coates. He attended the University of Missouri and then managed and owned radio stations in Missouri and New Mexico. Later in life he continued his education at Eastern New Mexico and moved to Albuquerque in 1985 where he was employed as a business professional at Sandia National Laboratories until his retirement in 2002.
His joy in life was spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren, sharing in many activities and accomplishments, taking special pleasure in fishing with his grandchildren. Don was a life-long Methodist and most recently a member of Mesa View United Methodist Church in Albuquerque where he often helped with the church finances and played the piano and organ to express his love for the Lord.
Cremation and interment of cremains will take place at Sunset Memorial Park in Albuquerque. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. at Mesa View United Methodist Church, 4701 Montano Rd NW Albuquerque, NM 87120.
