Dolores Melero (Melero) Algeo

Dolores “Lolita” Melero Algeo, died on Wednesday, September 4, 2019 inAlbuquerque, NM after suffering a stroke. Lolita was born in Madrid, Spain on Friday, March 4, 1932, and is survived by her son and daughter: Edmund A. Algeo of Cleveland, Ohio and Beatriz V. Algeo Gronert (Brian) of Albuquerque, NM as well as her granddaughters, Nona Maria Gronert (Madision, WI) and Eve Grace Gronert (Albuquerque). She is also survived by her three sisters : Victoria Prentice of Lima, Peru; Toya (Michael) Hayes of Tampa, Florida and Maria Melero of New York City and her cousins, Amalia Insua and Angel Melero of Miami, Florida and Maruja Kilby of New York. She had a special place in her heart for her niece and nephew, Stella Hayes Laclé (Max) and Glenn Hayes (Maria).

After the Spanish Civil War, her family emigrated to Santo Domingo, The Dominican Republic. Lolita met her husband, Warren H. Algeo (deceased) in Santo Domingo, and they married December 4, 1954. They lived in Puerto Rico for a year and then moved to New York City. Lolita’s biggest joy was raising her children, Edmund and Beatriz while living in New York City and Cleveland. She later continued her love of children enjoying her granddaughters, Eve and Nona, and taught them to speak Spanish. Lolita forged a lifelong friendship with her son-in-law, Brian, and was pleased to get to know Nona’s partner, Cade Bauer-Showers, in her later years.

Although Lolita and Warren divorced in 1981, they maintained ties and traveled together until his death in 2009. After raising her children, Lolita enjoyed teaching children Spanish, Photography and Art at the Supplementary Center in Cleveland and teaching Spanish at the Waldorf School in Charlottesville, VA during the 1980’s. She also taught Spanish to adults at the Cleveland Berlitz School of Language. Lolita continued to draw and paint through her entire life and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
