Debbie L. Stroup, wife, mother, "Omo," and friend, passed away on Sunday, January 12, 2025, in Albuquerque, New Mexico at age 69. She is survived by her husband, Michael Stroup, sister, Sheri Maloy, her husband, TJ and sons, Aaron and Shawn; daughter, Ryan Levi and wife Alaina; daughter, Shelby; grandchildren, Audry, Presley, Atreyu "Patrick," Neeva, Sawyer, Asha; and one great-grandson, Luxx "Michael". She was preceded in death by her parents, Don and Carolyn Day.
Debbie was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico in August of 1955. After graduating from Highland High School in 1972, she spent several years in Alaska before returning to New Mexico, where she lived until her passing. Alaska made an impact on Debbie. It shaped who she was and how she lived her life, long after she moved away.
Debbie was a devoted wife to Michael for over 40 years. Together, through the dust of many home improvement projects, they created a life full of love and laughter. They supported each other's dreams and held each other up when times got tough. While far from traditional, the love between Debbie and Michael was palpable and steadfast.
Debbie worked at the University of New Mexico Hospital as a Respiratory Therapist until her retirement in 2020. She was a dedicated therapist who took pride in her work and advocated for her patients. At work she was known for working hard, remaining calm in stressful situations, and being absolutely hilarious. Over the years, some of her co-workers became her most cherished friends.
When she wasn't working, Debbie enjoyed planning fun camping trips and memorable holiday get togethers. With her sister Sheri, she cared for her aging parents. All while supporting her daughters as they built homes and families of their own. Debbie loved old westerns, a good book, a hot cup of coffee, and a strong cocktail.
While Debbie was a loving and supportive mother, it was her role as "Omo" that brought her the most joy. Debbie thrived as a grandmother. She made sure each of her grandchildren felt special and uniquely loved. She gave the best hugs and kisses, she told great stories, she was silly, and she made life fun. She was the grandma who would take you to school, help you with homework, come watch your soccer game in the freezing cold, or just check on you when she knew you were having a hard day- and she did it all with love.
Debbie was a caretaker; it's who she was. She took pride in caring for her family, parents, friends, patients, and her home. It was not very often she wanted, or needed, anyone to take care of her. She was okay when she knew those around her were okay. Up until the day she died she was taking care of those she loved, and she wouldn't have had it any other way. Truth be told, in her own way, she is still taking care of us now.
Please join Debbie's family as they celebrate a life well lived. Memorial services will be held at FRENCH- Lomas at 10:00 am on Wednesday, January 29, 2025.
