Debbie H. Walters, age 68, joined her husband, Richard Armstrong on Tuesday, July 9, 2019 after a long, brave battle with multiple cancers.
Debbie was born in Bay Shore, NY. Debbie graduated from Kent State University and later attained her Masters of Business Administration degree in Baltimore, MD. While in Baltimore, her first job was in the banking industry. Later she formed her own consulting business, which she ran for over 18 years. After meeting the love of her life, Richard Armstrong, through their mutual interest in investing, Debbie moved to Albuquerque in 2001 and they later married. The path to marriage took a while. When they finally married, Debbie arranged to have Etta James's song "At Last" played at the wedding. Debbie became involved in non-profits, working full-time with the Young Women's Christian Association, where she was instrumental in establishing a transitional home for Veteran women. Furthermore, Debbie was Development Director at First Nations, where she made many wonderful friends. After Richard passed in 2012, Debbie grieved immensely but she chose to stay active in her retirement through philanthropy. On the board of directors for Domestic Violence Resource Center, Debbie raised thousands through arranging numerous large-scale annual fundraiser banquets. Further, Debbie was a charter member of Albuquerque Community Foundation's Social Giving Club. Her generosity was well-known throughout the community and will continue. An active member of American Institute of Individual Investors, Debbie along with Richard, were avid amateur investors. Debbie attended monthly meetings and thoroughly enjoyed researching and investing in the financial markets. Also, Debbie was a basset hound lover, having Rufus, Doodles, Cookie, Sasha, and lastly Munchkin. Debbie was a joyous friend, frequently regaling friends at her monthly Girls Escape Out dinners with hilarious tales of past and present dog exploits. Like Richard, Debbie's laughter generated from the heart and was contagious. Debbie's get-togethers frequently involved her many loving friends, lots of laughter, and numerous dogs of all sizes and shapes lumbering around among the people.
Debbie is survived by her two sisters, Maddy Lee of West Palm Beach, Florida, and Ronnie Abrams of Paradise Valley, Arizona; three grandnieces and nephews; and Richard's family, his son and grandson, brothers and sister, nephews, and grand-nephews and niece, Michael Deutsch, dear friends and neighbors, Marykay Chapman, Carol and Tom Maddux; and loyal basset hound Munchkin, all of whom will miss her terribly.
