Dawn Marie Sandoval died as she lived: with serenity, humility, and grace. After a steadfast and courageous 19 month battle with cancer, Dawn, beloved wife and mother, joined her precious daughter Lisa Marie in the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Wednesday, January 13, 2016.
Born March 29, 1963 in Brooklyn, NY, Dawn was preceded in death by Lisa Marie (in 1999), father James Maxwell, and maternal grandmother Doris Lambright, with whom she shared an exceptional bond. Dawn is survived by husband, Dr. Jerry Sandoval; sons, Eric and Jacob; mother, Beth Bamsey and husband Jay; sisters, Peggy Luke and husband Wes, Trish Stevens and husband Brian; cherished aunt, Candy Olsen; father and mother in-law, Fred and Bertha Sandoval; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
Raised in New York and Hawaii, Dawn completed her Bachelor's degree at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon, where she met the love of her life, Jerry, whom she wed in 1988. She later completed her Master's degree at UNM, earning a Master of Science/Certification of Clinical Competence (MSCCC) in Speech Language Pathology (SLP), and most recently, in 2014, earned her Master's Certificate in Education Leadership, also from UNM.
Specializing in early childhood, Dawn was highly respected in her field and over the years held a number of Speech and Language Pathology positions within Albuquerque Public Schools, at Presbyterian Ear Institute (PEI), and in private practice. In addition, Dawn was an outspoken advocate for the Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC) Foundation and dedicated years to raising community awareness of this rare disease.
Dawn will be profoundly missed and all who were blessed to know her will remember her for her incredible personal strength, integrity, caring and generous nature, her faith, and her devotion to her children and family.
