Col (Ret) David M. Pojmann, age 81, passed away on Tuesday, July 20, 2021, at his home in Bernalillo, New Mexico. He was a first generation American, born in Erie, PA on May 8, 1940, the son of Otto and Mary Pojmann.
He graduated from Cathedral Preparatory School in 1957 and was a distinguished military graduate of Gannon College in 1961. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the US Army upon graduation. After he graduated from the US Army Artillery School, he was assigned to Germany as part of the Berlin buildup. He performed as an artillery battalion fire direction officer then as a depot chemical officer and as a company commander, also in Germany.
He met and married the love of his life, Nita Chilcoat in Maryland following his completion of the Naval Explosives Ordnance Disposal (EOD) School. They were married at Edgewood Arsenal, MD in December 1966. They were separated a few months later when he deployed to Viet Nam, where he served with the First Air Cavalry Division as a chemical staff officer and commander of a chemical detachment. He was promoted to major in Viet Nam. After Viet Nam, the couple moved to Hill Air Force Base in Utah, Fort McClellan, Alabama, US Army Europe Headquarters in Heidelberg, Germany, and Fort Monroe, VA. He was picked to command the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant and later served as Director of Production and Plant Operations Director for the Army Munitions and Chemical Command, Rock Island Arsenal, IL, where he retired in 1987. He was a graduate of the Armed Forces Staff College, Industrial College of the Armed Forces, and the Army War College. His many decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, three Air Medals, Defense Meritorious Service Medal (3 awards), and EOD Supervisor's Badge. Following his military career, he worked for Olin Corporation and ATK in Independence, MO. He was a master gardener and volunteer for Seed2Need, a community organization that grows and donates produce for food pantries in the Albuquerque area.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Shirley Wolf; and his brother, Donald Pojmann. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, two daughters, Dr. Wendy Pojmann of Schenectady, NY, and Karen Pojmann of Columbia, MO as well as grandson, Eze Pojmann Ezeonyilo; granddaughter, Asa Pojmann Ezeonyilo and step-grandson, Kahlil Roth-Folly; and sons-in-law, Dr. Anand Prahlad and Mr. Andrea Parigi.
