Darryl B. Smith, 83, a resident of Los Alamos since 1958, died Friday, October 25, 2019, after a short illness.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; a son, Brian and wife Sarah, of Portland, Oregon; a daughter, Allyson of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and a sister, Catherine Scheel and husband Len, of White Rock, New Mexico.
Smith was born in Ryan, Iowa, and grew up in Decatur, Illinois. He received a Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico and worked as a physicist at Los Alamos National Laboratory for 37 years. For 29 of those years, he participated in nuclear materials safeguards and security research, and was manager of the program at the time of his retirement.
An accomplished artist, he enjoyed many hobbies like gardening, silversmithing, miniature oil painting, and master woodworking.
Darryl was a charter member of the White Rock United Methodist Church, where a Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be held on Sunday, November 3, 2019, 4:00 p.m. at White Rock United Methodist Church, 580 Meadow Ln, White Rock, NM 87547.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the White Rock United Methodist Church or to a favorite charity.
