Dan Scott Nielsen, beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle, grandfather, and friend, went home to be with the Lord on April 8, 2025. Dan was born on August 13, 1957, and was a life-long resident of Albuquerque. He attended Sombra del Monte Elementary School, Madison Junior High School, and graduated from Sandia High School in 1975. Dan held various jobs, but his career began when he began working for K-Tech Corporation at Sandia National Laboratories in 1986. He later went to work as a Sandian and made many contributions to national research programs as an experienced Technologist. Dan retired from Sandia National Laboratories in 2019 after a 33-year career.
Dan had a mechanical and creative mind and could do anything he set his mind to. If anything ever needed repairing Dan was your man. He completely remodeled his home and kitchen nearly single-handedly. Not only was he skilled in electronics and construction, but he was a true friend to those who knew him; always willing to lend a hand if anyone needed help. He was a longtime member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church and was always working at the church, either doing yardwork, installing toilets, or providing whatever services were needed. He was also an excellent cook and baker and created wonderful meals and many treats for family and friends. Dan was a gardener and tender of plants which all thrived under his touch. He loved his girls and was a devoted husband and father to his three daughters. Dan had a smile that could light up a room. His sense of humor was unending and he will be missed by so many. Dan was a softball player in his younger years. He loved baseball and was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan. His extended family hailed from Wisconsin and he was an avid Green Bay packer fan. Dan was always busy and had many interests from classic car restoration to coin collecting to fishing and a love of music. He could pick out the song and artist at the first note.
He is survived by his wife Julie Nielsen; daughters, Leah Nielsen (Sam Mumaw), Danah Nielsen-Montoya (Dionicio), and Beth Nielsen; mother, Janet Nielsen; siblings Linda Nielsen-Weber (Kurt) and Eric Nielsen (Dianne); as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews whom we loved dearly. Dan was preceded in death by his older sister, Jane Moriarty and father, Roy Nielsen. We would be remiss in not mentioning the grandchildren he was so proud of and loved so much; Jacob Mumaw, Ryan Mumaw, and Miah Montoya.
Services will take place on May 10, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 1500 Chelwood Park Blvd., N.E. Albuquerque, NM 87112. All who wish to send Dan good wishes are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, and to honor Dan's giving spirit and generosity, contributions can be made to St. Mary's Food Pantry. While his life was cut short and we wish to have had him longer, his life was filled with much family and many friends who loved him dearly. Dan was a good man who lived a good life, and the profound emptiness we currently feel will give way to wonderful memories to hold us over until we meet again.....
