Dakota William Powell, a young, tall, handsome man, all heart and all talent, succumbed to a long term illness on Friday, August 25, 2017.    Dakota graduated from the George School in Newtown, PA in 2009 and attended Colorado College where he majored in Business and Economics.  During a school break he enrolled in a glass blowing class in Albuquerque, and fell in love with the art. His glassware, infused with subtle sprays of color, his whimsical animals, and unique vessels – large, small, elegant, and finely formed spoke volumes about the heart and soul he filled each object with.   He worked for Simon Pearce in Quechee, VT, perfecting his technique before moving to Albuquerque.  His future was bright as he worked to establish his glass studio and retail space, with his dream of teaching young kids at risk to blow glass.

As a little boy, he flaunted a black wardrobe, and was most often seen in his Batman cape and mask, flicking the silk flaps over his eyes.  As he matured, his shyness grew quizzical, and his manners impeccably polite, matching his restless intellect, wit, and humor.  Though he sported a mean tennis racket, his sweetness was omnipresent- when he won his first soccer game, he cried. His best friend had been on the opposing team, and he felt sad for his friend’s loss.  He was a friend to all, especially animals and children.  He never forgot the beloved farm dogs from his days in New Zealand.

Dakota was born June 24, 1991, the son of Marc Powell of Albuquerque, NM, and Ivy Lewis of Princeton, NJ.  He is also survived by his sisters, Ariel Powell Green of New York, NY and Augusta Powell also of New York; his grandmothers, Toby Lewis of Cleveland, OH and Sally Powell of Albuquerque, NM; his great-uncle, Daniel Lewis of Coconut Grove, FL; his uncles, Jonathan Lewis also of Coconut Grove, Tom Powell of Richmond, VA and Adam Lewis of Aspen, CO; and his aunt, Rebecca Hicks of Albuquerque. His loving, extended family and lifelong friends are among those he cherished and adored.

We’ll miss you, CodyMan, and remember you always.
