Daisy G. Johnson passed away peacefully May 4, 2024 at the age of 88 after a lengthy illness.
She is survived by son Charles, daughter-in-law LouAnne, granddaughters Mary (Chris), Lisa (Carlos), friends that transcend family: Hazel, Melva, Barbie, and Tootsie, and dogs Betty and Cricket. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert H. Givens and Dorothy H. Givens, and her husband of 26 years, Richard Johnson.
Daisy was born in Tampa, Florida on December 2, 1935, where she grew up during the war years. During this time when her father was away at war, Daisy and her mother frequently traveled between Tampa and Albuquerque for the dry New Mexico air to ease Daisy's childhood asthma. Daisy later attended Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, VA, where she would receive her BA Degree. Afterwards, she traveled to Europe with the Civil Service and was briefly married. She gave birth to her son Charles and relocated to Miami, FL to be with her parents. After the death of her father in 1967, Daisy, her mother, six-year-old Charles, and the dog piled into the old car and made the final cross-country drive back to Albuquerque, where she lived the rest of her life.
Daisy worked in the insurance industry for decades and earned her Master's Degree from the University of New Mexico. In 1989, she retired and married the love of her life, Richard Johnson. They thoroughly enjoyed their time together with travel, home life, and church. Her lifelong passions were sewing, crafting, and her dogs, which she never seemed to be able to stop rescuing.
Daisy was a wise, highly intelligent, and ground-breaking woman. Because she had no other choice, she did things back in the day that women just weren't supposed to do, and she did them well. She was an incredible Mom and Grandma, as well as an amazing mentor, who provided gentle yet firm counseling when needed. She was a woman of deep and abiding Christian faith, which was the bedrock of her life. While she will be greatly missed, we are at peace knowing she is now with her parents, the love of her life Dick, her numerous beloved dogs, and the knowledge that we will all be together again when our times come.
We would like to thank Daisy's wonderful church family at Christ the King Anglican Church as well as the compassionate staff at Sandia Senior Suites and Roadrunner Hospice. We are beyond grateful.
Cremation has taken place and a funeral service will be held at Christ the King Anglican Church, 2525 Vermont St. NE, Saturday, May 25, 2024 at 10 AM with interment following at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd NE.
