Cyril “Cy” Matthew DeLong

April 5, 1932 – June 1, 2018

After a long battle with COPD, Cy passed on Friday, June 1st, 2018, at age 86 at home with his family by his side. He lived a lot in those 86 years… so many great memories. He was a hardworking man who also knew how to relax and enjoy life. He loved his family dearly and through good times and bad he did what it took to take care of them. In addition to being an amazing dad and grandpa and husband, over the years he was a farmer, a cowboy, a pilot, a Corporal in the Army who served in Korea, a heavy equipment operator, a foreman, a fisherman, a hunter, a gardener (best tomatoes ever), a traveler and he loved to tell stories.

He grew up on a farm near Foley, MN then moved to the Iron Range where he met his wife of 63 years, Lois Kaminen. They then moved to St. Paul before settling in Babbitt where they started their family and he worked in the mine for 25 years. From there his career took them to Silver City, NM where he retired from Chino Mine. A few years ago, they made the move to Albuquerque to be closer to family. Whenever he was able, he spent time hunting, fishing, camping and enjoying nature. In the early years he and his family traveled throughout the US. Later in life he and Lois spent as much time as possible at their place in Puerto Penasco, Mexico.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lois; two daughters, Elizabeth Kellner, of Urbana, IL, and Angela Pacheco (Carlos Pacheco) of Albuquerque, NM; brother Herman DeLong of Burnsville, MN, sister Mary Ratke of Rice, MN, and two grandchildren, Derik Kellner and Kelsey Kellner, as well as their fur babies, Gigi and Mia. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Esther DeLong, his brother Norbert DeLong, his sister Augusta Edwards, and his sister Sarah Wrich.

A Rosary will be held at 10:30 am with a mass to follow at 11:00 am on June 29, 2018 at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, 4020 Lomas Blvd NE, Albuquerque. Refreshments to follow at the DeLong/Pacheco home (address below). A military service will be held on August 3, 2018 at 2:00 pm at Fort Bayard National Cemetery, Bayard, NM. A Celebration of Life will be held on August 4, 2018 at The Pink Store in Palomas, Mexico, one of Cy’s favorite places.
