Cub "Cubby" Fowler Dillard, III
March 1952 - December 2021
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and friend, Cubby Dillard. He passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, December 20, 2021, after a battle with congestive heart failure and pulmonary fibrosis. He would have celebrated his 70th birthday in March 2022.
Cubby was born into this world in 1952 in Ardmore, Oklahoma. He lived most of his life in Dallas, Texas. At age 23, he was introduced to Sharon May, who was 18, through a close family friend, Pam Fain Burnett. Eight months later, they had a huge Catholic Church wedding. With all the odds against them, many said they wouldn't make it because they were too young, and it was too soon. Two sons (Ryan & Austen), lots of and ups and downs with endless loving memories... they turned around, and it was 46 years later!
Cubby's younger years in Dallas were spent as a General Manager of Truck Sales Co. for over 25 years. He sold diesel trucks and tractors to interesting folks across the country. At times, he even sold them to movie sets that would use them in their action movies. In 1999, Cubby and Sharon moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico to join the family business, Get A Grip Resurfacing. This began their adventure to making a garage business to one that now has over 30 locations across the county. He was the National Franchise Consultant for this family-owned venture.
Cubby was a wonderful family man, a great cook, husband, partner, father, soccer coach, grandfather, "Papa," and a great friend. One of his greatest accomplishments was finding a special place for the family in Florida in the late '80s - the magical place of Seaside, Florida. We were lucky enough to have one last vacation with Cubby, in Seaside Florida. It was a wonderful time spent with the kids, grandkids, Cub's sister Marcy, brother-in-law Ron and his favorite niece Elizabeth with her family. Many memories, over many years with family and friends have been made. We will continue to visit and enjoy it every year to remember him.
He never lost his love of cars, having completely restored two antiques - a 1956 GMC pickup and a 1977 Ford Bronco. His love for horsepower, translated to a love for horses. For over a decade, Cubby and Sharon owned four quarter horses and rode on the weekends in the mountains of New Mexico and Colorado. They also attended Team Pending, Ranch Sorting clinics and events in Santa Fe and Pagosa Springs.
Most recently, Cubby enjoyed sitting on his patio at his new home in the Heights, looking at the beautiful New Mexico sunsets. He also loved watching the Dallas Cowboy games every weekend with his two sons, Ryan and Austen. In fact, he spoke of his excitement for the Cowboys this season and his enjoyment of watching the games just minutes before he passed.
Cubby gave us all hope when we were lost, loved us patiently and unconditionally, and made us laugh harder than any other human being. We will always love you. You will be forever in our hearts. Rest in peace. We will miss you.
Cubby is survived by his wife of 46 years, Sharon; son Ryan and his wife Gina; son Austen and his daughters Harley and Ariana; his sister Marcy Dillard Hart and brother Scott F. Dillard.
