Cohee Merriott, age 100, went to be with her Lord and Savior on March 28, 2015. She was born in Magdalena, NM on October 20, 1914 and raised in Tishomingo, Oklahoma. She lived her life with energy and enthusiasm, ready for challenges and relying on her faith in Christ Jesus for wisdom, guidance and support. Cohee is preceded in death by her husband, Gene Merriott; her parents, Onie and Joel Wolfe; brothers, Glenn and John (Pogie); and sister, Romero. She is survived by her nephews, Crayton, Robin, and Floyd; her nieces, Berniece and Cynthia; and great and great-great nephews and nieces. She especially loved her twin great-great nephews Wiley and Garrett Byrd and their sister Olivia, and Kolt and Karli Byrd. She is also survived by good friends, Lenn and Danny Prince, their children and grandchildren who loved Cohee as their "adopted" grandmother. Cohee was very proud of her Chickasaw Indian heritage and her voicemail greeting was "You have reached Cohee's little teepee, why don't you send me a smoke signal". Hundreds of people celebrated her 100th birthday with an open house and reception at First Baptist Church and Brookdale Place Valencia. Cohee enjoyed UNM football and basketball but her true passion was Oklahoma University football. She treasured the Happy Birthday call that came from famed OU coach Barry Switzer. Cohee, a devoted Christian, was a member of Albuquerque's First Baptist Church where the congregation knew her for her bright colored clothing and hats. Even at age 100 she was faithful to weekly Bible study. After retiring as a librarian at Kirtland Air Force Base, she took up golf and joined the Hilltop Women's Golf Club at University South course. She volunteered with UNM men's and women's golf tournaments. She visited every state in the US and traveled around the world, making many new younger friends on each trip. For years a group of friends met every Thursday at Padilla's Restaurant. A visitation will be held Wednesday, April 1 2015 at 12:00 p.m. at FRENCH - University. A Memorial Service will follow at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Albuquerque Building Fund, 4601 Paradise Blvd., Suite B, Albuquerque, NM 87114. We ask that you wear red clothing or a hat to the service to honor Cohee.
