Jaffe, Claire Dankner
Claire Dankner Jaffe, 96, a resident of Albuquerque since 1994, passed away on March 28, 2016. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Saul Joseph Jaffe; and her sister, Helen Dworetz, of Paterson, NJ. Claire was born in 1919 in Passaic, NJ. She attended Pennsylvania State University and became a hospital dietician at Brooklyn Jewish Hospital in NYC. She married Saul, the love of her life, whom she met in her father's delicatessen store, and grew up together.
Claire was a devoted and loving mother and grandmother. Saul's work at the National Labor Relations Board took the family to Washington DC. Claire received her M.A. in nutrition from the University of Maryland and worked for the Science Information Exchange, under the Smithsonian Institute, classifying research in nutrition. When she retired, Claire read for the blind, first at the Library of Congress and later in Albuquerque. For many years, she swam three times a week at the Horn Family YMCA and she developed a network of friends.
She was a member of Ohr Kodesh Synagogue in Chevy Chase, MD for 47 years and of Congregation B'nai Israel in Albuquerque for 40 years. Claire loved being an active member of both synagogues. Next to her family, the congregation at B'nai Israel was the core of her life. She kept up with the news, politics and current literature. She was a woman of generosity and kindness who thrived on conversation and social interaction, especially if she was helping others.
Claire is survived by her son, Allan Jaffe, of Rochester, MI, and his children, Seth of Athens, Greece and Devorah of Astoria, NY; by her daughter, Elizabeth J. Roll and husband, Samuel Roll, and their two children, Julia of Oakland, CA and Eric and his wife, Elizabeth Ann Roll, of Albuquerque, NM; by her great-granddaughter, Grace, of Albuquerque, NM; by her son, H. Ari Jaffe, and wife, Gitie Jaffe of Chicago, IL, and children, Aaron of Brooklyn, NY and Michael of Alexandria, VA.
Services will be held Thursday, March 31, 2016, 10:00a.m., at Congregation B'nai Israel, 4401 Indian School Road NE, with Rabbi Arthur Flicker officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
