Chris Johnson

December 28, 1952 — December 7, 2020

Chris was an active person and enjoyed the outdoors, nature photography and hunting. Despite his good health and athleticism, he was not able to overcome Covid-19. This sudden loss is devastating for his family and friends and he will be greatly missed. A beloved husband, and wonderful father and grandfather, he was a respected member of his community. Chris's impact on those around him cannot be measured in words.

Chris was born in Socorro, New Mexico on December 28, 1952. He graduated from Hot Springs High School in 1970 with letters in Football and Track and Field. He served in the Air Force for 4 years as a Radar Technician and then earned a B.A. in English from the University of New Mexico. He joined Varian Medical as a Field Engineer and changed countless lives with his service and knowledge for the next 35 years. He retired in 2016 to travel and spend time with his family. Chris and Judy were married February 17, 1979. They enjoyed 41 years of marriage. Their families were friends before they were born so they had known each other since childhood. They shared their lives in Albuquerque and lived in the same home for nearly 40 years. When they were young, they enjoyed group activities, such as camping, with other young families.

Chris was a thoughtful and stoic man. A gentle and kind soul that could build a quick rapport with people and animals alike. He drew others to him with his friendly sense of humor. He was the kindest person many of us have ever known and there was no problem he couldn't help with. He was always ready with a necessary tool, much needed craft beer or word of encouragement. He liked fast cars and slow vacations. He liked to travel, taking his wife wherever she wanted to go. Chris enjoyed photography, leaving behind 50k pictures of a life lived in fullness. And always with family, friends, or both. Much of his life can be defined as being in service to others. Whether it was the military or helping a friend or family member through a difficult situation. Chris is survived by his wife, Judy; his children, Andrea and Buckley; his grandchildren, Kaleb and Zoe; and his 3 older siblings, Mary Ella, Buck, and David.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, https://www.rmef.org/donate , and drink a chocolate stout.
