Chavez, Charlie

Charlie Chavez, 90, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather (The Great One) passed away on Thursday, March 3, after a short illness. He was a loyal and lifetime fan of Notre Dame, the Dallas Cowboys, the New York Yankees, and the Lobos since Johnson Gym days. Charlie never met a stranger. He made many close friendships during his life and his close friends were supportive to the end. Charlie retired from a lifetime career at Sandia National Labs and served honorably in Patton's Army during World War II. An avid sportsman, he spent most of his spare time on either the tennis court or golf course, and continued to play until he was 88. He and his wife, Angie, are among a small group of founding members of the Tennis Club of Albuquerque. Charlie was a faithful member of Risen Savior Catholic Church where he developed friendships with his 4:00 p.m. Saturday group. He was preceded in death by his mother, Monica Cervantes, and father, Dionisio Chavez, three sisters, and one brother. Charlie is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Angie; children, Charlene and husband, Tom, Jeff and wife, Sylvia, Norman and wife, Debbie; and brother, Ricardo. His grandchildren were the light of his life and he enjoyed every moment he spent with them: his namesake, Charlie, Christine, Gillian, Lauren, Samantha, Natalie, and Courtney. He was blessed to have enjoyed his three great-grandchildren, Bryson, Devon, and Aubrey. 'We will miss your jokes and humor and the twinkle in your eye!'
His family would like to thank the dedicated caregivers at Kaseman Hospice for their loving care and attention and the medical staff at Presbyterian Hospital.
