Charles E. Sr. (Charlie) was born in 1927 in Milroy, West Virginia. We lost this gentle soul on Monday, August 7, 2023. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Virginia, his true soul mate and the love of his life. He was also preceded in death by his son, Charles E. Williams, Jr.; his great-grandson, Isaiah P. Hill; his parents Retha and Oley Williams; his brothers, Dalton Williams and wife Opal, Thomas Williams and wife Jean; and his sisters, Ona Howard and husband Ronnie and Shirley Cogar and husband Ted. Charlie is survived by his daughter, Linda Ferguson and husband Wade; daughter-in-law Helen Williams; grandchildren Amy Gagne and husband Marty, Charles E. Williams, III, Krista Thompson and husband Kevin, Brian Ferguson and wife Becky, Lisa Ferguson and husband Chris Scott; great-grandchildren Savannah Miller-Williams, Colby Hill, Radley and Rex Ferguson, Kai and Xander Scott-Ferguson, and Jenny Rusk. He also leaves behind three sisters Genevieve Saeler, Gertie Gibson, and Gerry Mealey and husband Junior; two brothers Dee Williams and wife Kay, and Dewey Williams and wife Carol; and numerous nieces and nephews; as well as many close friends. Charlie served in the U.S. Army in World War II, While in the Army, he was a baker for German Prisoners of War in Aberdeen, Maryland. He was then transferred to Sandia Base in 1946 where he was a cook and baker feeding over 700 personnel daily. He was very proud to be a part of the Manhattan Project Operation Sandstone in the South Pacific during the testing of the atomic bomb. After getting out of the Army, Charlie worked for and retired from Mountain Bell Telephone in 1983 after 35 years of service. He was a longtime member of St. John's Methodist Church where he was an usher for 20+ years. Charlie was a very caring and generous man often buying a meal for a homeless person he came across and donating to multiple charities. He was an expert storyteller and loved sharing his stories. He was a proud West Virginia Hillbilly! He never met a stranger and he would strike up a conversation with everyone he met. He loved Bluegrass music, fishing and traveling. His world revolved around his family and his friends, and he was extremely generous to all of them. He brought joy, love and humor to our lives every day. He was the most positive person we knew. We will be forever grateful to Amy Gagne (his granddaughter and sweetheart) and her husband Marty Gagne for the excellent loving care they provided to Charlie (Pops) in the last 2 1/2 years of his life. We are also very appreciative to Navaeh Hospice especially to Luciano, his nurse, for the kindness and excellent care provided to Charlie and his family in the final days. Charlie will be loved and missed by all who knew him. A visitation will be held on Friday, August 25, 2023 from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at French - Westside. Funeral Services will be Saturday, August 26, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's United Methodist Church, 2626 Arizona St NE, ABQ 87110. Interment will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE ABQ, NM 87107.
