Charles Bryan "Charlie" Allen died on December 3rd in Jemez Springs, NM after courageously battling cancer for over 30 years. Charlie was a loving husband, brother, and father who made a lasting impact on those he met and will be missed by many.
He was born in Sugar Land, TX in 1941 to the late Richard and Rosalee (Johnson) Allen and grew up in Rosenberg, TX. After graduating from Fabens High School, he joined the Army in 1961. It was during Charlie's time in the Army that he met the love of his life, Barbara. It only took a brief courtship for them to know they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together, and they were married on March 1, 1963.
In 1965, while living in El Paso, TX, Charlie, and Barbara lost their first child, Bryan, at birth. After graduating from Texas Western College with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration in 1966, they relocated to Houston, TX where Charlie worked for Armco Steel, and where their daughters Rhea Elizabeth and Beverly Ann were born.
Charlie longed for a new challenge and change in scenery, and in 1969 he accepted a job as Budget Analyst for the Department of Energy at Sandia Air Force Base in Albuquerque, NM. In 1970 Charlie and Barbara's youngest daughter, Robyn Yvonne, was born, and Charlie also earned his Master's degree in Public Administration from the University of New Mexico. They eventually settled in Peralta, NM and raised their girls there, enjoying long walks, horseback riding, camping, hunting, fishing, and traveling.
In 1994, Charlie retired from the Department of Energy. Not long after Barbara retired in 1996, they found the "perfect cabin" in the Jemez Mountains, where they could enjoy retirement to the fullest, and where Charlie could follow his passion for hunting and fishing anytime (and anywhere). They also found Jemez Springs Community Presbyterian Church, where they were welcomed with open arms, and where Charlie served as an Elder and in other volunteer roles.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, his infant son Bryan, his brother Richard, and his brother-in-law Carl Glaser. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Barbara Rhea (Jones) Allen; his daughters Liz Grabber and husband Duane Grabber of Connecticut, Beverly Allen of Albuquerque, Robyn Newsom, and husband Russell Newsom of Tennessee; 8 grandchildren; his sister Alice Lee Glaser of Anthony, New Mexico; his sister-in-law Glynna Allen of Arizona; and numerous extended family members. A service will take place at 11:00am on Friday, December 10, 2021, at Jemez Springs Presbyterian Church, 17570 NM-4, Jemez Springs, NM 87025. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations in Charlie’s memory to the charitable organization of the donor’s choosing.
