Born in Houston, Texas, Cathy Criswell Harper passed away on February 9, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was a devoted mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and grandmother whose kindness and optimism touched everyone who knew her.
Cathy is survived by her beloved son, Matt Harper, and his wife, Grace Harper. She was a proud grandmother to Gabriel, Xavier, Rocky, Waylon, Lucia, and Maximus, always cherishing the time she spent with them. She also leaves behind her mother, Lena Stone Criswell, who, at 100 years old, remains a source of strength and wisdom, as well as her sister, Bonnie Mares, and nieces, Laura Mares and Kimberly Mares. She was preceded in death by her father, Glen Criswell, and her sister, Melinda Criswell.
Born in Texas, Cathy later moved to New Mexico as a child to help manage her chronic asthma. She was in Girl Scouts, played tennis, and participated in Job's Daughters. Cathy earned her degree from the University of New Mexico, where she cultivated her love for learning and teaching. She later followed her dreams of living in New York City before returning to New Mexico.
She was married at the UNM Alumni Memorial Chapel and later divorced, raising her son Matt, with boundless love and devotion. She built a career as a typist and founded her own business, The Writer's Choice, allowing her to work from home while raising her son. Later, she worked as a substitute teacher. Both roles reflected her dedication to education and helping others. Despite being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at a young age, she remained one of the most optimistic people you could ever meet. Her resilience and generous spirit shone through in the countless hours she dedicated to volunteer work, earning her many well-deserved awards.
Cathy shared a deep bond with her son Matt, spending time together hiking, learning to juggle, going to movies, plays, and concerts, and embracing every adventure. She was an enthusiastic sports mom, supporting him in baseball, basketball, hockey, and wrestling, and she also served as a den mother for his Cub Scout pack. She found great joy in being a grandmother to her six grandchildren. She was known for her unwavering positivity and belief in making the most of every moment, often reminding those around her to simply "Have fun."
A memorial service will be held at French's on Lomas on Friday, February 21, 2025, at 10:00 AM, with burial to follow at Sunset Memorial Cemetery.
