Catherine (Katy) Marie Bunnel was born March 11, 1929, into the family of Lloyd and Ruby Bunnel and their sons, Catherine’s beloved older brothers, Robert and Keith. The family moved to New Mexico from Humboldt, Kansas, when Katy was in high school. From that time on, she considered New Mexico her true home.
While a student at the University of New Mexico, Katy met her Tom, Thomas G. Davis, the man with whom she shared over 65 years of married life, and who predeceased her in 2016. Tom was a proud member of the U.S. Marine Corps, and his career took Tom and Katy and their children Marsha and Clark all over the United States. Katy made homes for her family wherever they were stationed. At the same time, she was active in organizations such as the Officers’ Wives’ Club.
When Tom retired, the family moved to Albuquerque where they lived for many years, supporting Lobo basketball and becoming active participants in the First Presbyterian Church. Katy was a deacon, a volunteer with the Helpline program, a member of a women’s circle, and a member of the Presbyterian Women’s Coordinating Team. Katy also volunteered with the Menaul School Historical Society and with Martineztown charitable programs.
In addition to church activities, Katy belonged to, and took leadership positions in, the women’s organization PEO, most recently as a member of Chapter X. In 2016 she received the honor of “Golden Girl,” signifying 50 years with PEO.
Katy, who died November 13, 2017, was a loving wife to Tom and mother to Marsha (Paul Mitchell) and Clark. She was truly a gracious lady. That gracious lady, however, was seen on occasion jumping up and down and yelling at the TV during Lobo basketball games.
Memorial Services will be held Tuesday, November 21, 2017, 10:00 a.m., at First Presbyterian Church, 215 Locust NE, Albuquerque, NM 87102. Memorial donations in Katy’s name may be made to Presbyterian Women, c/o First Presbyterian Church.
