Catherine Elizabeth Miles (née Foery), affectionately known as Cathy, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2024, at the age of 78 in Albuquerque, NM. Born on November 10, 1945, in Brooklyn, NY, Cathy dedicated her life to nurturing and caring for others both in her personal life and professional career.
Cathy married her next-door sweetheart in 1968 and was a devoted and loving wife to Tom Miles for 56 years. Her other true passion was nursing. Cathy's academic journey at St. Vincent's Hospital Nursing School NYC laid a strong foundation for her fulfilling career as a Registered Nurse. In 1980, she joined the University of New Mexico Hospital as a RN and dedicated 23 years serving on 4 West and 5 South. Her commitment to healthcare and leadership extended into her role as Nurse Manager at UNMH Family Practice and S.E. Heights clinics. Cathy was always willing to help new managers and was instrumental in building the mentorship program at UNMH. Although her math skills were somewhat suspect, her creative poems led her to be dubbed the hospital's unofficial poet Lauriat. She was also well known for her extensive collection of Elvis memorabilia to which her friends and colleagues would regularly contribute.
Cathy was a loving mother to Kathy Chavez and Thomas Miles III, and mother-in-law to Max Chavez and Donna Gieske Miles. She was a cherished grandmother to Ashleigh, Brittany, Madeline, Max and Elijah, and a great-grandmother to Alaya. Cathy's family was the cornerstone of her life, and she imparted her values of love and care to each of them.
Cathy was preceded in death by her parents, Katherine Shea Foery and Major General Martin H. Foery as well as her brother, Marty Foery. She is survived by her two sisters, Cecilia Gomez and Ava Fitzgerald. Her Catholic faith played a significant role in her life; she was a member of St. Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Centre, NY, and Risen Savior Catholic Church in Albuquerque. She was also an active member of the Model T and Model A clubs, often touring with Tom around the back roads of America.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Cathy's life at Edelweiss Am Rio Grande - German American Club 4821 Menaul Blvd NE, on Tuesday July 16, 2024 from 1pm to 3pm. Her legacy of care, compassion and devotion will be remembered by all who knew her.
