Carol Haviland Lewis passed away March 4, 2016 at her home in Albuquerque. Carol was born October 23, 1928 in Brooklyn, NY and grew up in Elizabethtown, NJ. She relocated to New Mexico in 1946 to attend the University of New Mexico. At UNM, she met her husband, Colonel Hilliard Harrison Lewis, Jr. (Ret.). They married September 1, 1949 and were married until Hill predeceased her in 2011.
Carol is survived by her children, Hilliard Harrison Lewis III, his wife Deborah and children Hilliard Harrison Lewis IV, Courtney Loveless and Rachel Parker; Grant Haviland Lewis, his wife Janet and son Jeremiah Lewis; Paul David Lewis and his wife Jennifer; and Janet Carol Lewis and her wife Catherine. Carol is also survived by her brother-in-law, Claude Lewis and his wife Nancy; her sister-in-law, Dorothy Ribble and her husband Norman; and numerous nieces and nephews. She also has seven great grandchildren with an eighth on the way.
Carol volunteered and supported numerous organizations and causes throughout her adult life including serving on boards at the national and local levels for the Delta Delta Delta sorority, the board of the Horn YMCA, Blue Portal, and All Faiths Receiving Home.
She traveled all over the world while Hill was on active duty. These travels encouraged her desire to learn about each place she traveled which resulted in her being well-versed in the history and cuisine of many cultures. She particularly loved sharing her knowledge about her adopted home state of New Mexico. Fortunately, Carol was an avid reader which provided her the avenue by which she gained her vast knowledge.
Carol was a strong advocate for shelter dog adoption throughout her life. She had her current companions Punkin and Bobo with her to the end.
Graveside service will be on Thursday, March 10, 2016 at 11:15 a.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please donate to All Faiths Receiving Home or your local animal shelter.
