Bruno V. Bednarz

Bruno Bednarz, beloved father, grandpa, and great-grandpa, was called to his eternal home on July 25, 2019. He was born in 1924 on the south side of Chicago. In high school, he excelled at football and earned a scholarship to college. However, he heard the call of duty and enlisted in the Army Air Corps. It was the adventure of his life, and Bruno was very proud of his military service during World War II. After the war, Bruno returned to Chicago and began working as a mechanic for a construction company. He worked on many of the large expressways and toll roads built in Chicago during the 1960s and 1970s.

He married the great love of his life, Evelyn, and had three children. He happily retired to North Carolina, where he played on the championship golf courses of Pinehurst, NC, and became an avid gardener and photographer. Bruno shot a hole-in-one, not once, but twice! In 2006, Bruno and Evelyn moved to Albuquerque to be closer to family. They were married for 66 years. Bruno was beloved by his family for his wisdom, strength, calm demeanor and perpetual good humor! He truly was a member of “the greatest generation.”

Bruno is survived by his children, Sherry Fila (Richard), Jim Bednarz (George Anne Thibodeau), and Mike Bednarz; his grandchildren, Stefanie Tierney, Erin Campbell (Brandon), Amanda Myers (Patrick) and Josh Bednarz; and his precious great-grandchildren, Everett and Beckett.

The family wishes to thank the dedicated nurses of High Desert Hospice, and especially the caring staff at the Woodmark Uptown, who provided such expert care.

A Rosary will be held Monday, August 12, 2019, 8:00 a.m., at Our Lady of the Annunciation Church, 2621 Vermont NE, followed by a Funeral Mass at 8:30 a.m. Interment will take place that afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bruno’s name to the Wounded Warriors Project.
