Brigitte Monica Moneim passed away peacefully at her home on the morning of Thursday, January 19, 2023. She was 78 years old.
Born to Josef and Friedericke Ambros in present-day Slovakia in 1944, Brigitte's life journey spanned three continents. Her family emigrated to Melbourne, Australia during her early childhood before returning to Vienna, Austria when she was a teenager. She held on to her unique accent throughout her life. Armed with a nursing degree and her remarkable force of will, she immigrated to the United States in her 20s, living in New York City and working in multiple skilled nursing jobs, including at the Hospital for Special Surgery, where she met a young Orthopedic doctor who would become her life long husband. She developed a passion for sailing, earned a captain's license and spent many great days on Long Island Sound.
Brigitte settled in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1976 with her husband, where she raised two children and continued to make a lasting impression on everyone she met. She loved animals and gardening, and established a small farm, teaching herself how to make cheese from goat's milk, egg noodle pasta from fresh eggs and knitted goods from the wool of her sheep. Later in life she resumed her nursing career, became a certified real estate appraiser, trained as a baker and developed a small fruit tree orchard which she loved dearly. She gained her US citizenship in 2016.
She will be remembered as a loving wife and mother, and a woman of towering drive, perseverance, and competence.
Brigitte is survived by her husband of 47 years, Moheb; her children, Omar and Sonya; grandchildren, Brody and Everly; and daughter-in-law, Tara.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to New Mexico Horse Rescue At Walkin N Circles Ranch, https://www.wncr.org/donate
There will be a small family gathering to honor Brigitte at a later date.
