Betty Jean Carlson

d. December 30, 2015

Betty Jean Carlson, age 84, passed away December 30, 2015 surrounded by her family. She now resides in Heaven, free from pain, with her Lord and her loved ones who have gone before her.
Brought up on a cotton farm in Dexter, NM, she was one of ten children. She held a strong core value of hard work. Throughout her life many days were spent hoeing and pulling weeds, caring for her animals and canning vegetables from her garden.
She loved her family. Nothing made her happier than being with her husband, son, daughter, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Betty's greatest delight was serving her family, making sure everyone was comfortable and well fed. She absolutely gave her all unselfishly.
Betty loved God and church. She was committed to raising her family, loving and serving the Lord. In turn, she ensured a spiritual inheritance that runs deep in the generations that have followed.
Betty's love for her husband Jack, of 65 years, is a beautiful picture of long term commitment and honor. They began their life together living in a small travel trailer in Roswell, NM. She helped Jack build his company from its beginnings by spending her evenings holding a flashlight, so he could sheetrock more houses. Throughout their lives together, she was always the hardworking farm woman, still faithful to her church, still loving and serving her large family and still loving her husband with all her heart. Betty held strong to her values. She never wavered leaving a very rich and long legacy.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Jack; son, Steve and wife Barb; daughter, Linda Griggs and husband Billie; brother, Warren Miles of Hagerman; and sisters, Sue Turner and Joyce Kenny of Roswell; six grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Loftis and Anna Miles; in-laws, Swan and Lucille Carlson; five sisters; one brother; and her granddaughter.
Her service will be on Friday, January 8, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at First Spanish Fruit Avenue Baptist Church, 812 Fruit Ave. NW. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NW.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Portales Baptist Children's Home, 2200 S. Ave. I, Portales, NM 88130.
