Betty Christian Brown, 90, of Albuquerque, surrounded by her family, peacefully joined her husband, Edward S. Brown, Jr. on December 2, 2015. She is survived by her dear granddaughter, Natasha of California; granddaughter, Clarie S. Brown Miller of Albuquerque; great-grandchildren, Ty McCray and Shelby Ryan of Albuquerque and Tanner Dallas and Kyleigh Tate of Colorado Springs. She also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews in New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Massachusetts; as well as her loving dog, Noodles. She was preceded in death by her husband; her two sons, Lawrence Brown and Paul Clifford Brown; her two sisters, Francoise and Clara Jo; and son-in-law, Brett Miller.
Betty was born in 1925 on the family farm in Stephens County Oklahoma to Robert Joseph Christian and Alpha Archer. During her school years she bonded with her life-long friend DH Ford of Oklahoma. While working at the Pentagon, Betty was informed a suitor she met in Oklahoma, Edward, had been wounded in Italy and was on his way back to the States for medical care. She and Edward agreed to marry during Edward's hospital stay as the doctors warned her Edward would not live past five years. Upon his death, they had been married for 59 wonderful years. In the late 1940's, Ed and Betty settled in Albuquerque where they adopted and raised two sons. During their time in Albuquerque, Ed and Betty were active members of First Presbyterian Church where they adored their church family. For years Betty assisted with youth programs, created banners for display throughout the church and served as a deacon. One of Betty's favorite hobbies was making stuffed animals. With her custom Betty Brown stuffed animals, she contributed to the smiles of many generations. Betty consistently volunteered throughout her life with organizations such as Martineztown, All Faiths Receiving Home, Menaul School and many others. In their retirement years, their second home was in Horseshoe Springs in the Jemez Mountains. They found peace in the culture, community and beauty including being actively involved in Jemez Presbyterian Church. She was a beautiful woman of great class, who always carried herself with poise.
Friends and family are invited to a Memorial Service at First Presbyterian Church, 215 Locust St. NE, on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. A lunch and reception will follow. Betty will be laid to rest privately alongside her husband at Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Menaul School or the All Faiths Receiving Home.
