Betty Sweeney

Betty (Aranda) Sweeney, 89, passed away peacefully Thursday, May 23, 2024. Betty was the youngest of 6 children born Thursday, November 1, 1934 to Roman and Elosia (Romero) Aranda in Las Vegas, New Mexico.

She was married 69 years and is survived by her husband, Ambassador James Sweeney. She is also survived by a daughter, Rhonda (Wayne) Davis; and a son, Donald Sweeney.

She is preceded in death by a daughter, Joann Voight; and a son, James Sweeney.

She has 4 grandchildren Anthony (Danielle) Davis, Phillip (Madeleine) Davis, Chandler Sweeney, and Vanessa sweeney; and 1 great-granddaughter, Sophie Davis.

She was a homemaker before she became a Real Estate agent for Harper and Associates, ERA and Pargin Realty in Albuquerque, where she was a frequent top producer.

She traveled extensively with her husband, Jim, to Spain, Jerusalem, Switzerland, Germany, Egypt, Portugal, Argentina, and Brazil. She was active in the Kirtland Air Force Wives Club and served as chairman of the Gourmet Group. She was part of the Women's Guild at the Risen Savior Catholic Church.

Betty was a person of great love and respect for all that knew her. She was known for her gracious personality and love for all people. Betty demonstrated her ability to care for the needs and support of people in need of help. Her magnanimous generosity was always available to all. She was greatly respected by all that knew her. She was sincerely a kind, gentle, loving, and friendly person. A truly outstanding person that will be deeply missed by all that knew her.


Funeral services will take place Wednesday, June 5, 2024. A rosary at 9:30am followed by a 10:00am mass at Risen Savior Catholic Church, 7701 Wyoming Blvd. NE. A reception will follow at Betty and Jim's home.


Pallbearers are Grandsons Anthony Davis and Phillip Davis, son, Donald Sweeney, son in law, Wayne Davis, and nephews, Paul Wildenstein and Michael Aranda.
