Bernard E. Smith, born to Michalina Zaremba of Moosburg, Germany on April 10, 1949, passed away September 16, 2015. Bernard immigrated to the United States in 1956 and became the second son of Evelyn and Willis Smith. Bernard (Bernie) and his brother Stephen grew up in the quiet green of Albuquerque's North Valley and attended St. Mary's School. In 1967, Bernard enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving aboard the USS Virgo AE-30. During the Vietnam tour he came to greatly admire the simplistic elegance of the Japanese architecture of Sasebo and fell in love with beauty of the Philippines. Later, Bernard blended those elements with Southwestern architecture to develop his unique style in the design and construction of homes. At the age of 24 he began his own company, B.E. Smith Construction which he renamed Adobe Designsa"Custom Building and Restoration. Always working alongside his crew, sweating, shaping, refining the craft, his structures held many subtle wonders. A man of great strength in life, in love, in duty requested that his ashes should be scattered in the mountains he most cherished. Bernie is survived by his wife, Janet L. Smith; his brother, Stephen W. Smith and his wife, Liz of Edgewood, NM; his sister, Rita Esquibel and husband, Frank of Bosque, NM; beloved nieces, Alisa, Haley, and Andrea; nephews, Zack, Daniel, and Joseph; brother and sister-in-law, Brad and Kathie; and his many wonderful cousins and friends. Services including a tribute at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe are pending. Please visit our online guestbook for Bernard at . FRENCH - University 1111 University Blvd NE (505) 843-6333
