Belisandro Mares, 94, born in Black Lake, NM and longtime resident of Albuquerque NM, died Monday, April 24, 2017. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary; son, Gary; daughter, Michele Boland; son-in-law, John Boland; daughter, Janelle Howe; grandchildren, Sam Mares (Brianne), Victoria Boland, Andrea Howe, Rio Mares, Winston Howe and Matthew Boland; great-grandchildren, Jayden Howe, Myah Drummond and Ellie Mares; siblings, Carolina, Celina, Eleanor, Orlando and Elvira. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Michael Mares; parents, Belisandro and Carlota Mares; siblings, Aurora, Flora, Tonita, Robert, Carlos, Eugene and Andres.
In college, he met the love of his life Mary, on the steps of Hodgin Hall at University of New Mexico and they have been married for 68 years. He received his Bachelor’s degree at UNM and his Master’s at Stanford University. He is a veteran of WWII and he taught for the Peace Corp. Belisandro was a longtime Spanish teacher for APS. During his lifetime, he and Mary had a travel agency and they traveled the world.
He was a loving husband, parent and grandfather.
A visitation will be held Friday, April 28, 2017, 4:00–6:00 p.m., followed by a rosary at 6:00 p.m. at FRENCH – Wyoming. A funeral service will be held Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 10:00 a.m., also at FRENCH – Wyoming. Interment will take place at Gate of Heaven cemetery.
