Barbara Hawley passed away August 30, 2013. She was born in Owosso, MI, on June 12, 1918, the oldest of the four children of Stanley and Florence Grill. She attended the University of Michigan, where she met and married Ransom Smith Hawley of Ann Arbor. Barbara and Ransom eventually made their home in the San Francisco Bay Area. Ransom predeceased Barbara in 1975, after pursuing a career in the US Army and retiring as a Colonel. In addition to his military career, Ransom was for many years a public school teacher and administrator. Barbara is survived by two sons and their families: Jim, his wife Pam, granddaughter Kate, grandson James, his wife Kristy, and great-grandson Chase; and Doug, his wife Linda, and grandchildren Stephen and Sarah. She is also survived by her sister, Jo Palmer of San Clemente, CA. Barbara was employed as an executive secretary until she could stay home and raise her children. For years, she was an active member and state officer of California Republican Women, and was also active in Alpha Phi sorority, Daughters of the American Revolution, the Society of Mayflower Descendants, and the Church of Christ Scientist. Her last years were spent in Albuquerque, NM, where she passed peacefully surrounded by her family. A private memorial service and interment will be conducted at Arlington National Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband Ransom.
