Avelina Chavez Battaglia, only daughter of Petrita Pena Chavez and Nicodemos Chavez born on October 18, 1921, in the South Valley neighborhood of Pajarito, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at the age of 102. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John J. Battaglia; her son, Mark A. Battaglia; seven brothers, Nick, Ben, Manual, Eloy, Frank, Dan, and Paul; and sisters-in-law, Vidalia, Geraldine, Curla, and Margaret.
As a Third Order Franciscan for 48 years, Avelina championed a magnanimous heart and lived her life in the spirit of St. Frances. Avelina is survived by her son, Johnny Battaglia and wife, Kathy; daughter, Ava Garcia and husband, Anthony; brothers, Ricardo Chavez and Alex Chavez and wife, Nadine; sisters-in-law, Dora, Marie, Fina, and Adeline; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family.
Special thanks to mom's hospice nurse, Olivia.A Rosary will be recited Thursday, March 14, 2024, 9:30 a.m., followed by Mass at 10:00 a.m., at San Felipe de Neri, 2005 N Plaza St. NW. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A reception with take place at San Jose Mission following the burial, 2110 Los Luceros Rd. NW. Pallbearers will be Johnny Battaglia, Anthony Garcia, Emilio Chavez, Pete Saiz, Daniel Chavez, and Orlando Garcia.
