Arthur (Art) Jones Jr

January 10, 1934 — July 24, 2013

JONES, ARTHUR (ART) JR. Art (also known as "Billy" among family members and friends from the days of his youth) was born January 10, 1934 to Raley Jones and Wilma Durst Jones in Augusta, Georgia. He graduated from the Academy of Richmond County in 1951 and from the University Of South Carolina College Of Pharmacy in January 1956. He entered the U.S. Army in September 1958 and served until June 1960. While in the Army, Art was stationed as Pharmacist at the 14th Field Hospital in Bad Kreutznach, Germany. Art became a Christian early in life and attended Baptist churches wherever he happened to be located. At the time of his death, he was a member of Alameda Baptist Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was a member of the Alumni Association at his beloved University of South Carolina. Also he was a charter member of the American Legion Post 400 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Other organizations of which he was a supporting member were: Alameda Baptist Church in Albuquerque, American Institute of the History of Pharmacy and the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah. Art began his work life in drug stores at age 14 at Gardelles Drug Store in Augusta, Georgia. Once he graduated the University Of South Carolina School Of Pharmacy and secured his licenses he always worked as Pharmacist. He retired from Revco Drug Stores, after having served in several states, ending with the store in Pecos, Texas. In 2006, Art celebrated being registered with the South Carolina Board of Pharmacy for 50 years. Through his years of working in drug stores, Art made many friends and served as mentor to many young people. He always made friends wherever he lived. He especially holds many people in the West Texas town of Pecos close to his heart. Like his mother and maternal grandmother, Art was an avid reader. Also, he enjoyed traveling with his wife, Vera, when his health permitted. His maternal grandfather, William A. Durst, remained a friend and major influence in his life as long as his grandfather lived. Art is survived by his wife, Vera Galligher Jones of Albuquerque, New Mexico. There has never been a better friendship or a couple who had a more enduring sweetheart relationship than Art and Vera. He also is survived by 1st cousins, Wilma Thiede and Barbara Sweeney, of North Augusta, South Carolina. Also, his is survived by 2nd cousins, Chris Thiede and Ashlyn Hardy of North Augusta, SC; 3rd cousin, Marclee McDaniel of Greenville, SC and 4th cousin, young Schaefer McDaniel of Greenville, SC. Art was preceded in death by his father, Raley Jones and his mother, Wilma Jones Cochran. Also, he was preceded in death by his grandparents. A Visitation will be held Saturday, July 27, 2013, 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. at FRENCH - Lomas. Funeral Services will be held Monday, July 29, 2013, 3:00 p.m. at Alameda Baptist Church, 8818 2nd Street NW, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Interment will be at the U.S. Military Cemetery in Columbia, South Carolina where there will be a Graveside Service. Vera expresses special gratitude to Dr. David M. Brown and his staff for having cared for Billy for a number of years. Also, special thanks go to the staffs of Altura Homecare, Hospice of the Sandia's and Advantage Home Care that provided talented caregivers like Cecelia Rivera. Over the last two years, there have been too many wonderful providers and caregivers to list them all. After having suffered through many, many illnesses and surgeries, Billy is now at peace and is in line to see Jesus, his Savior, and Pop, his all-time human hero, as well as his friends and the other members of his family.
