Arthur Avriell Gorrell Jr

Arthur Avriell Gorrell Jr., 92, February 15, 1925 - March 1, 2017 . He leaves his wife Helen Page Gorrell; son Bob and wife Terrie of Placitas, NM, their children Gavin Gorrell and Matt Schoberg; his son Jeff and wife Lisa of Santa Barbara, CA, their children Tiana and Sterling; his daughter Anne McFerron and husband Joe of Edmond, OK, their children Madison and Morgan; and his niece Sharon (Gorrell) Weathers of Granite Bay, CA.
Born in New Martinsville, West Virginia, his family moved to Carlsbad, New Mexico in 1930. While serving in the Airforce in WWII, Arthur met Helen at a dance in London, England, and they married 71 years ago and never stopped dancing. After the war, Arthur attended the University of New Mexico graduating in the first class of degreed Engineer/Architects and became a very successful designer of public schools and custom homes all over Eastern New Mexico. He was a forward thinker and was bestowed a number of national awards for his work and was recognized in publications such as the New Yorker, AIA Journal, and Engineering News.
Arthur served Carlsbad and the State of NM as a volunteer in many positions including as Commissioner on the New Mexico Board of Examiners for Architects, and the Construction Industries Commission, and on the vestry of the Carlsbad Grace Episcopal Church. Arthur loved to play golf and take frequent walks with his love Helen. He treasured his family and always made time to make them feel special. After his retirement in 1992, Art and Helen traveled the world. He lived a full and happy life, and we are honored to celebrate the dash between the day he entered the world and the day he left it.
He was preceded in death by his father Arthur, his mother Lula, and his brother Lloyd. A memorial service will be held 10:00AM, Saturday April 15, 2017, at the Grace Episcopal Church in Carlsbad, New Mexico.
