David Anthony Hunter, 31 years old, was a New Mexico native, born in Shiprock, lived in Farmington, where he attended elementary school and Sacred Heart Church before moving to Albuquerque in 2002. There, he attended Madison Middle School and La Cueva High School where he found his tight knit group of lifelong friends. A fierce friend with a dry sense of humor, who loved to ruthlessly give people a hard time but constantly made them laugh.
Growing up Anthony was a black clad, Juggalo, skateboarder, who enjoyed letting his exterior fool you. His determination to maintain his independence and responsibilities was apparent from a young age. He challenged himself through work, skills and knowledge. When he joined the Metropolitan Detention Center in 2014 it gave him a new sense of community that allowed him to develop into the strong man he was. He was dedicated member of the C.E.R.T team, being extremely proud of his promotion to Sergeant.
Hunter was eccentric and always pumped for the next cross country “Gathering” or “baller” snowboarding trip. Other interests were kayaking, camping, fishing, golfing, swimming, gaming, riding his horses, playing chess and dusting off his Disney VHS’s.
His love of outdoors led him to call Edgewood home, with many animals that he cared for never turning away a stray. He opened his home to friends and family to help them through tough times asking little in return.
Recently Anthony took a day trip to Santa Fe, they had just gotten snow and if the mountains are calling, he felt he must go. Anthony, his sister and Mom went for the day. It was white out and very cold, Mom decided she would wait at the lodge while her two eldest snowboarded. Anthony was far more advanced than his sister but refused to leave her. Getting super stoked when she did well. Half way through the day he wanted to check on Mom, she wasn’t in the lodge but instead reading her book in the car. When he got to the parking lot he noticed several people stuck in the snow. Anthony being Anthony was the first person to offer help and teach them how to drive in snow. As they pulled away exclaiming there thank you’s he would proclaim “Get Sum!”, his way of brushing off any recognition. He was exhausted but happily returned to the mountain to finish the day doing what he loved.
Anthony was taken far too soon during the first snowstorm of the season on 2/2/22. Anthony’s family personally thanks Kevin Mullaney and any other citizens that pulled over to help with the accident on the mountain as Anthony always did. We pray those who knew Anthony carry his spirit with them. He is greatly missed, and will always be remembered for his unparalleled love of adventure and life!
