Annis Eugenia Dodd Nelson was born to Ruth Lilla Maude Myrtle Mahala Smith Dodd and David Edward Dodd in 1926 in Boaz, Alabama. She married James Winfred Nelson in 1946. They had been married 66 years at the time of his death in 2012. Annis is survived by six children and their partners, Donna Nelson, Linda Nelson, Helen Nelson, David Nelson, Claire Nelson Gentry, and Janna Nelson; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren, as well as her large extended family. The Dodd family love of education supported Annis in leaving for Berea College at age 16, two long bus rides away from home. There her love for learning, equality for all people, and service to others grew. With quiet, gentle courage Annis created an atmosphere of empathy, compassion, and patience. With a journey intertwined with her beloved James, Annis was the backbone of the Nelson family. Though her presence was a quiet one, she used her gentle strength to build a loving home full of compassion and respect. She always encouraged curiosity and an open-minded approach toward the world. She shared her sense of levity through her dry wit and quick humor. her Christian faith and belief in the innate goodness of each human being was the foundation for Anni's approach to life. She found beauty in the world around her and in the people in her life. Enjoying birdsong, coffee in the morning, a good conversation. Annis held deep gratitude for the small things around her. Her humble nature belied a strong woman.
