Anna Smetana Ables, 93, a resident of Los Ranchos, NM died Friday, August 03, 2012. She is survived by her daughter, Kathryn Joyce Ladd of Los Ranchos, NM; grandchildren, Trish Aragon and husband, David, Sandra Dunn, Frank Ladd, Jr. and wife, Collene, Becky Capwell, Tondi Correll, Anna Hooker, and John Smetana; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Alex, Scott, Allyson, Austin, Kahlin, Cody, Billy, and Robert; step-children, Coral Gibson, Janine Howard and husband, Roy, and Troy Ables and wife, Jayne; many step-grand and great grand-children; nieces, Alice Cook and husband Bruce Jones and Reene Ohlmacher and husband, James; and numerous other relatives and friends. Ann was preceded in death by her parents, John and Judith Plesnik; daughter, Anna Marie Smetana; husbands, Major John Smetana and Stan Ables; and sisters Katherine Cook and Irene Kadlecik. She was born in 1918 in Kostolany, Czechoslovakia and emigrated to the United States at the age of eight through Ellis Island. Ann then was raised in New York State where she met her future husband, Major John Smetana. They were married in 1936 for 35 years and had two daughters. She was a military wife and volunteered as a "gray lady" helping to translate for immigrants while in New Orleans. They moved all over the United States, including Alaska, and finally retired in New Mexico. After the death of her first husband in 1972, she married Stan Ables and they were married 27 years. Ann enjoyed animals, gardening, cooking, fishing, the great outdoors, and remained active up until her final days. She was a very positive and generous person, always putting others first. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Ann was a loving mother, grandmother, great-and great-great grandmother and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 11, 2012, 3:00 p.m. at French-Westside Chapel with a Reception to follow. Private interment will take place at Santa Fe National Cemetery, at a later date.
