Lovekin, Ann Strayer Echols Lewis
Ann Strayer Echols Lewis Lovekin of Albuquerque, NM, passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Savior on October 6, 2015. She was born April 25, 1931 in Clifton Forge, VA, to Mildred McNeill Lewis and William Strayer Lewis. Since her father was a civil engineer designing roads and bridges along the eastern seaboard, Ann's childhood involved frequent moves and adventures with her parents and older brother, Bill. She graduated from junior college at St. Mary's Seminary and received her B.A. from the University of Maryland with a major in sociology and psychology and a minor in the writings of William Shakespeare. Following graduation, she was employed by the Episcopal Diocese in Washington, D.C.
As an Air Force officer's wife, Ann lived and traveled for many years in the Far East, Europe and Canada, as well as the eastern United States, before moving to Albuquerque in 1969. Here, she continued to lovingly raise her five children, with her door and her heart always open to an abundance of friends, neighbors and animals. She was a member of the first Board of Directors of the New Mexico Conference of Churches and served on lay commissions of the Diocese of the Rio Grande. Especially interested in genealogy, Ann was a member of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Society.
In 1977, she married The Rev. A. Adams Lovekin, Ph.D., an Episcopal priest and clinical psychologist. She worked in her husband's private clinical practice and assisted in his founding of the Samaritan Counseling Center of Albuquerque in 1987. Later, in 1995, she assisted Adams in the founding of the Church of the Holy Cross in Edgewood, NM.
Those who knew Ann would undoubtedly describe her as a gracious, deeply spiritual, caring, friendly, beautiful and elegant woman. Their home was decorated in her favorite color of blue. She most often enjoyed wearing sunshine yellow, reflecting her joyful countenance. Ann and Adams treasured the friendships they made over the years and, most recently, at their home in the La Vida Llena retirement community. She was a faithful member of the Order of the Daughters of the King and of the Cathedral of St. John Altar Guild. Most importantly, Ann considered time spent with her children and grandchildren to be her greatest joy and blessing.
Mrs. Lovekin is survived by her husband, eight children: Peter Isburgh (Johanna) of Austin, TX; Susan Price (Kevin) of Panama City Beach, FL; Kathryn Wilson (Britt) of Cedar Crest, NM; Carolyn Crombie (Richard) of Sandia Park, NM; Ann Staab (Eric) of Albuquerque, NM; Michael Lovekin of Riverside, CA; Sue Lin Lovekin (David Beal) of Anchorage, AK; and Stephen Lovekin (Kristiana) of Riverside, CA. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, Nathan, Austin and Travis Isburgh; Jess Price and Sara (Price) Martin; Neil Wilson and Laura (Wilson) Stafford; Trevor and Heather Crombie; Kalani and Liang Lagao; Nicholas, India and Katherine Lovekin; and 5 great-grandchildren. Ann was predeceased by her brother, William Strayer Lewis, Jr.
A Memorial Service in celebration of her life, love and ministry will be Monday, October 19, 2015, 11:00 a.m., at the Cathedral of St. John, 318 Silver Ave, SW, Albuquerque, NM 87102.
