Ana-Maria Encinias, known to everyone as Nana, passed away on December 23, 2015. She was 59 years old.
From an early age, Nana was a passionate and devoted animal lover. She adopted quirky animals and loved the ones others ignored. She was involved with animal volunteer organizations and spent much of her free time working and training her dogs in order to visit hospitals and nursing homes and participate in agility competitions.
Nana studied at the University of Albuquerque where she earned a B.S. Elementary Education (bi-lingual and ESL), and M.A. Special Education and an Ed.S. Educational Administration. She taught elementary school for 13 years and worked her way up to principal and then into administration. She followed her father Dr. Miguel Encinias' work in championing bi-lingual, ESL and multi-cultural education in New Mexico. Her career spanned more than 40 years. She loved her job and continued to work despite her battle with breast cancer which began three years ago. She showed amazing strength and courage.
By her side stood Robert Hein, her husband of almost 5 years. Nana and Robert were junior high school sweethearts who reconnected after full careers and lives of their own. Robert helped and supported her through the difficult times and brought her great comfort for which her family is most grateful.
Memorial services will be held on Sunday, January 3, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. at the University of New Mexico Alumni Chapel, 1889 Central Ave. NE.
