Alvin B. “Al” Krawietz passed away on Monday, September 21, 2020. His wife of 59 years, Sherry (Wilson) Krawietz, was by his side, just as she has been throughout his struggle with dementia in recent years. Al and Sherry have two children, their daughter Melissa and son Tony; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Al was born August 14, 1938, to Antone and Rufina (Keller) Krawietz, and he grew up on the family farm near Poth, Texas. After completing his education, Al went to work as a land surveyor. He and Sherry met in Montana and were married in 1960. From 1961 to 1963, Al served in the U.S. Army as a medic and was stationed in Albuquerque, which became his home from that time forward.
After leaving the Army, Al returned to his career of surveying, which he enjoyed tremendously. After working for various construction and engineering firms, in 1979 Al started his own surveying business, Krawietz and Associates, where for the next 40 years he focused on big infrastructure projects such as powerlines, pipelines, highways, and airport runways. Al was known for his legendary work ethic and sharp mind, and he taught the lessons of hard work as well as surveying skills to all those who worked for and with him, including his wife Sherry, his children Missy and Tony, his grandson Josh, and countless others.
When Al took time off from his work, he could often be found on a tennis court. While still in high school Al traded his guitar for a tennis racket, and he became a talented tennis player. He shared this passion with his family members and many friends. Al always enjoyed the outdoors, which made his career as a surveyor a bit of a vacation to him, from the desert Southwest to the Rockies, to the Pacific northwest.
Without a doubt, Al made an impact. He “established centerline” in the field and in many people’s lives. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
