Allen Stecker

December 13, 1919 — November 3, 2017

Allen Stecker, age 97, died on November 3, 2017. Born in Clovis, NM on December 13, 1919, he graduated from Clovis High School in 1936. He received an Associate of Arts degree from Eastern New Mexico University (Junior College) and a BBA degree from West Texas State University (College), Canyon, TX. He taught high school for a couple years before entering the military in 1941. After serving four years in the military and being discharged as Captain in 1945, he received an MBA from Leland Stanford, Jr. University Graduate School of Business, Palo Alto, CA in 1948. After receiving the MBA from Stanford, he came to Albuquerque and entered public accounting, working as a CPA for over thirty years. He left public accounting and became controller of a major Albuquerque construction company, retiring in 1986.

Over the years he pursued his hobbies of “do it yourself projects” around his home and sewing for his family. He was quite adept at both making clothes, bedspreads, quilts, and window coverings from Ohio, Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico. As a friend once commented, “Allen was as comfortable working with concrete as sewing a seam or baking butterscotch pie.”

Allen was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, New Mexico Society of CPA’s and a charter member of the Exchange Club of Albuquerque, serving in several official capacities, including president and spending over thirty-five years as treasurer of the Exchange Club of Albuquerque.

Allen is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Evelyn (Mayfield) Stecker; parents, A.L. and Fern Stecker; and two sisters, Evelyn Guilbeau and Mildred Guy. He is survived by children and their spouses; son, David (Marlene) Stecker, daughter Karen Stecker and daughter Linda (Charles) Carlson. Allen had eight grandchildren and spouses; Kristin (Scott) Randolph, Anthony (Mieka) Stecker; Andy (Lauren) Carlson, Zac (Fumi) Carlson, Amy Carlson; Anna, Aaron, and Avi Goodman; thirteen great-grandchildren; Harrison, Addisyn, Jolie, and Quentin Randolph; Annika, Adrie, Dylan, Ethan, Bennett, and Evan Stecker; Ryan, Jake and Cade Carlson; and nephew, Darrell Guy.
