The family of Alice Mae Mead Shover regrets to announce her passing on Sunday, March 15, 2020, at 11:00 p.m., 10 days short of her 95th birthday, in Albuquerque, New Mexico at Aspen Care Assisted Living Facility.
Alice was born Thursday, March 25, 1925 in Greenwich, Connecticut the daughter of the late Gidion and Alice (Peterson) Mead of Georgetown, Connecticut and, Titusville, Florida. She attended Plattsburgh High School where she was active in Archery, Bowling, Sewing, Dancing, Drama, Yearbook, Hiking and Friendship Clubs. She was a reporter for the school newspaper and enjoyed playing basketball.
Alice was predeceased by her husband, Captain Frank Edward Shover, Sr. (US Army Retired) whom she met in a chance encounter at a local dance for servicemen. They married in 1943 in the Memorial Chapel at Plattsburgh Barracks. Over time, as a military family with five children, they lived in Austria, West Germany, and several States in the US. She was also predeceased by a son, William Reynolds Shover who died in 2015 after a long illness. Her siblings, Walter Mead, Gertrude Infante, Grace Mead, John Mead, and Thomas Mead also predeceased her.
Alice was an active member of the Sandia Baptist Church, in Albuquerque, New Mexico where she was the Church Librarian. In this position Alice polished her skills as a bookbinder and enjoyed teaching these skills to others. When the Church properties were expanded, she oversaw the development of a library. She was the Regent of the Zia chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and represented New Mexico several times at the national convention in Washington DC. Alice was a member of the Embroiders Guild of Albuquerque and they worked on numerous projects such as decorations presented to Vice President Cheney for his residence Christmas tree. They auctioned off a quilt for charity each year. They donated and maintained a cloth art exhibit at the Museum of Albuquerque. She was a member of the Eastern Star. In Albuquerque she worked providing inventory and marketing assistance to supermarkets.
